One of the easiest ways to know whether or not your roof needs to be replaced to to look for the tiny stones or granules that are normally stuck to the surface of the shingles in your gutters and downspouts. A large number of these granules indicates that your shingles have reached the end of their lifespan. Seeing shininess on your roof is another indication that it needs to be replaced. That shine is from the fiberglass backing of the shingle catching the sunlight, which indicates that parts of the shingles have worn away. The best way to know if you need a new roof is to have us come take a look and do a free roof inspection (link to page).
